Is it possible to set a default encoding when opening file?

Hi,

Is it possible to set a default encoding when opening files?
Current default (ANSI) does not match the encoding of files I am working on.
Although I associate my file with SuperEdi, I cannot open the file by simply clicking on the flie icon since it will be opened using ANSI encoding and everything is messed up.
I have to execute SuperEdi first, and then select the right encoding before opening my files.
It will be nice if I can set a default encoding for each file type.

BTW, I use SuperEdi to edit files mixing ASCII and BIG5 codes, and find it very useful since this editor is the only one I know that can correctly do syntax highlighting on mixed-code files.
A lot of Thanks.

Sincerely,
Raymund

Re: Is it possible to set a default encoding when opening file?

In the latest version, 3.3.3 U, this setting is available on the Unicode tab in the options dialog. However, there is a bug which I have just noticed. When opening files from Windows Explorer, by double clicking or selecting Edit with SuperEdi from the context menu, the file defaults to ANSI. Then, if you close the file and reopen it from SuperEdi's explorer pane or the open dialog, it does default to the configured setting.

BTW, it is not possible to use mixed encodings in one file. I think you will find that your files are actually just in Big 5, but that does contain the common ASCII characters as part of its character repertoire. However, I'd recommend you just use Unicode because it supports every character — either UTF-8 or UTF-16 — unless you need Big 5 for support in other applications.

In SuperEdi 3.4 the default encoding now applies to all files that you open from Windows Explorer.

Hi,

I cannot open files or see websites as the encoding of my computer changes automatically. I have to change it back to view the page. It's quite troublesome. Pls help me with my problem.

Re: Is it possible to set a default encoding when opening file?

Dear Mr/Mrs. Anonymous,

I don't understand why your computers encoding changes automatically. However, with SuperEdi you can manage it.

You can set the default encoding that SuperEdi used on drag and drop operation or if you open files from Windows Explorer. The setting is found under Tools/Options/Unicode.

If you select default(ANSI), then SuperEdi uses the default codepage of the operating system. However, if the encoding of the operating system changes frequently and you want to use always the same encoding in SuperEdi, then you must select a different default encoding. For example select Cyrillic (1251) if you frequently edit Russian texts.

If you have set Cyrillic (1251) as default encoding, but you want to edit a Turkish text, then you must open the turkish file with File|Open and select the encoding Turkish (1254) for this single file.

If you don't know the encoding of a file, then you must try possible encodings in the File|Open dialog until you find one that works. SuperEdi can automatically detect UTF-8 and UTF-16 if the byte order mark (BOM) is used in these files.
