ftp password special characters

Could not find solution in previous posts, so here goes...

Using "Open FTP File" works fine when using a site with no special characters. However when using it on a site with special characters in pw I can browse site but when I try to open file I get following error: "An unknown error occurred while accessing ftp://[username]:[pw]@[url and file path]"

My password contains ! and :
They are translated to "%21" and "%3a" in the url box below the browse window.

Since there are several users on the site it is problematic to change the password.

Can I change anything in the url box to make it work?
