Startup takes ages and then it freezes

Just wanted to try this editor. but it takes ages until it starts, and after it had come up, it froze and in the title bar was the "(Not responding)".

What is it doing at startup?!?

Re: Startup takes ages and then it freezes

SuperEdi reads the contents of the desktop folder on startup for display of the integrated Explorer tree. If the desktop contains many icons, this can take some time. Especially shortcuts to HTML files tend to take very long. I'm not sure why. Please try to remove these icons from the desktop.

Re: Startup takes ages and then it freezes

Wolfgang, slow loading might discourge new users from continuing to use SuperEdi.

Perhaps you could add an option for the integrated Explorer tree to (1) not read the desktop and another to (2) not read HTML shortcuts. Also, it would be better to have Desktop files in a top level folder called "Desktop", instead of at the top level.

If the integrated Explorer tree reads all subfolders when a top level folder is first selected, it would would be better to not read subfolders until one is selected.

Re: Startup takes ages and then it freezes

I have the same problem. I cannot use SuperEdi, because I use the desktop as desktop for the recent files and links I have to work with. So Superedi take about 2 min to start. Is there an option to prevent the desktop scanning?

Re: Startup takes ages and then it freezes

The latest beta version 3.8.4. addresses this problem by loading the Explorer tree icons in a separate thread. This should speed up startup time significantly.

You can download the beta version from here:
http://www.wolosoft.com/en/superedi/download.html

Be warned that this is beta software and it's not very stable. But I would like to hear feedback if this version really starts faster.

Re: Startup takes ages and then it freezes

Hello,

I still have that freeze-problem ("Not responding") with SuperEdi 3.9. On my 2 Gigahertz XP machine, everythings fine. But on my 500-MHz PIII notebook (Win2000, >400 MB RAM), Windows Explorer freezes when starting SuperEdi by:
a) context menu "Edit with SuperEdi"
b) context menu "Send to --> Super Edi"

But what *does* work without a problem:
c) Open a file with context menu "Open with --> Super Edi"
d) starting SuperEdi via Windows startmenu

I had it with SuperEdi 3.81 or 3.82, too.
I could try to find an older version to check, because I can't remember that from 3.6 or 3.7.
My desktop is quite empty, and has no html-Links.

Bye, thanks!

Dirk

P.S.: Auch deutsche Antwort möglich. ;-)

Re: Startup takes ages and then it freezes

Dirk, I think your problem is something different, because a) and b) are performed by the SuperEdi shell extension (SuperEdiExt.dll). The advantage of this method is that you open multiple files at once.

By "freeze", do you mean it consumes 100% CPU time? If yes, is it the SuperEdi.exe or the Explorer.exe process?

Are you working with a restricted user account or as administrator?

You could try to unregister and re-register the shell extension, but I doubt that it will make a difference...
regsvr32 -u SuperEdiExt.dll
regsvr32 SuperEdiExt.dll

Re: Startup takes ages and then it freezes

Hi,
- I'm working as admin
- unregister and re-register didn't help

"Freeze" means, that the program windows out of which I wanted to open a textfile with SuperEdi (e.g. Windows Explorer or Speed Commander) doesn't react anymore and becomes partly blank-white. My CPU is completely idle, even the Explorer-process has 0%.

May I get an older version to test, e.g. 3.6 which I had in earlier times?

Re: Startup takes ages and then it freezes

Hello everyone,

thank you for quick help, Wolfgang!

I've tried some things and think I'm near...it's not SuperEdi's fault.
1. As mentioned above, the problem depends on the way *how* SuperEdi is started - see my message from 2007-01-08.
2. The "freeze" does *not* happen when SuperEdi is yet running while opening a file from Windows Explorer.
3. On my computers it's a problem with the firewall software: The problem seems to be a very special software combination between Windows 2000 (SP4) and Sunbelt Kerio Firewall in current version 4.3.268.
a) It does not occur with older versions of Kerio.
b) It does not occur with that version under XP.
It seems to be a failure in the firewall itself, because it happens even on a freshly installed system.

I haven't tried it under other programs like Zone Alarm, yet.
What personal desktop firewall software do you use, Mr. Riedel, Pfeiffer, Pesch?

So, thanks again for helping.
